Description
This work explores how strongly people can be influenced by those around them and by others’ opinions. The eyes surrounding the figure symbolize the gazes, judgments, and condemnation that a person constantly feels directed at them. They seem to follow every movement and prevent the person from freely being themselves. The figure finds itself in an enclosed space, surrounded by a multitude of these gazes. Gradually, the words and judgments of others seep in, causing the person to doubt themselves, hide their desires, and withdraw into themselves. Newspaper clippings reinforce the image of informational and social pressure—everything that surrounds us and shapes others’ expectations of who we should be. “Backed into a Corner” is about a person caught between their own “self” and a multitude of others’ perspectives. It’s about how important it is not to let the opinions of others become a cage for one’s own personality.
